Wicked Film Festival 2008
The Wicked Film Festival took place in Tinahely
over two days, the 29th and 30th of August. The festival is now in its third year and consisted of an ArtLinks
workshop for Filmmakers, two screenings of shorts made by participants of the
Young Filmmakers Training Course and a Young Filmmakers Bursary Award Ceremony.
Details of these events are listed below.
Talented Young Filmmakers receive Bursary Awards

Four talented young Filmmakers from Wicklow received Bursary Awards from
Wicklow County Arts Office and County Wicklow Film Commission in 2008.
The recipients were Robert Manson, Peter Farrell, Dylan Haskins and Dean
Kavanagh. Awards were presented
by well known Film Producer John McDonnell who has worked on such films are
‘Braveheart’, ‘Six Shooter’ and ‘Prey Alone’.
The Award Ceremony took place in the Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely.
It was a very successful evening, with members of the television and film
industry attending and guest speaker Ben Keenan from Fastnet Films discussed
their latest film commissioned by Wicklow County Council and imparted very
useful advice on the film industry.
Producer John McDonnell said afterwards, that he was very impressed by
the short film produced by the four award winners, and that the standard was
extremely high for film students.

Both Wicklow County Arts Office and County Wicklow Film Commission feel
that these bursary awards represent a substantial investment in developing film
resources for young filmmakers in the county. This is the third year that the
Wicked Film Festival and bursary awards have taken place and each year the event
grows in popularity and attendance.

Young Filmmakers from all over Wicklow get
their short films screened.
Screenings of six short films took place in
the Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely on Friday 29th August and
Saturday 30th August. The films were produced by fifty-six young
people from all over county Wicklow aged between twelve and sixteen. This
initiative was sponsored by Wicklow County Arts Office and County Wicklow Film
Commission, as part of their commitment to supporting the film industry in
Wicklow.
Both events were very well attended and the
Courthouse was filled to capacity.
The lights were lowered, goodie bags were distributed and a delighted audience
sat back and laughed and clapped their way through the six short films. Films
such as ‘Love is Deadly’, a film about zombie love, ‘CSI Tinahely’ where a
terrible crime in Tinahely was solved and ‘Reece Lightening’ a story with a
surprise ending were screened.
The course participants were shown how to
write, act, shoot and edit their own films under the expert guidance of
professional filmmakers Terence White and Alan Slattery. They sat down and
brainstormed, and then took to the streets of Tinahely to shoot, using many of
the local shops and houses as film locations.
This is the third year that the Young
Filmmakers Training Course has taken place and with the help and support of
local youth organisations, Wicklow Rural Transport Initiative and the continued
sponsorship and management by County Wicklow Film Commission and Wicklow County
Arts Office, it is envisaged that it will continue for many years to come.
