Community Facilities

In 2009 as a result of support from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government an audit of Community Facilities in County Wicklow was conducted. This audit focused on Community Halls, Arts and Sports Facilities.

The location of these facilities in the county can be seen in the accompanying maps. The need for a comprehensive audit was identified as an issue during the consultation process which was undertaken by the Taskforce on Active Citizenship which identified the lack of community facilities in which community activity including voluntary, sporting, civic and recreational activity could take place as a major obstacle to community development. Therefore the Report of the Taskforce on Active Citizenship (2007) recommended that an audit of all community facilities be undertaken by Local Authorities to establish a detailed county- wide database collected at a local level.

In mid 2008 the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government approached Local Authorities to undertake such an audit. The maps in the following pages show the distribution of Community Halls, Arts Facilities and Sports that participated in the audit in County Wicklow.
