Environment - Introduction

Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland because of its natural environment – its rivers, lakes, mountains, seashore, forests and varied landscape. The Goal of the Water and Environmental Services Directorate is:

“to protect, conserve and enhance the natural environment of County Wicklow for present and future generations, taking into account the environmental principles of sustainable development and Local Agenda 21”.

Wicklow has its environmental problems. Many people commute to Dublin daily, leading to clogged roads and bad air emissions. We’ve experienced illegal dumping and other waste malpractices.

Make the garden even greener: reduce and recycle your waste, save energy and go gently on our resources. The small differences made by us all have a big impact county- wide.

To achieve this goal our department is divided into different sections, which include:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has responsibilities for a wide range of licensing, enforcement, monitoring and assessment activities associated with environmental protection. On their website you will find information describing how they perform their duties in these areas, as well as the rules and procedures we follow in adminstering environmental laws and regulations. You will also find details information on environmental quality, monitoring programmes, technical guidance, licensing and enforcement.

For more information about EPA, visit their website at: www.epa.ie
