Each station has one or two fire appliances which are equipped to deal with
emergency situations. A fire appliance is generally fitted out with ladders,
hoses, water tank, water pumps, foam making equipment, Breathing Apparatus Sets,
Chemical Protection Suits as well as a host of small equipment for various uses.
All fire appliances also carry specialist equipment for use in Road Traffic
Accidents including Hydraulic Crash Rescue Equipment including cutting and
spreading tools.
40 drill training sessions per year are carried out at each Fire Station in the
county. A programme is set out each year to ensure that all the basic procedures
are covered. This training is carried out by the Station Officer.
In the last number of years new fire stations have been built at Arklow, Wicklow
& Blessington.
Three new Fire stations are to be constructed in Rathdrum, Dunlavin and Baltinglass
and construction is due to start in 2009. These
have been approved for construction by the department of Environment Heritage &
local government in the 2006 capital programme. These buildings are currently at
design stage with construction due to start in 2007. The construction of a new
Fire Station has also been recently approved for Dunlavin.
