Primary Schools Fire Safety Programme

A Primary Schools Fire Safety Programme was launched by the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Dick Roche on Monday the 13th of November. This programme was developed by Northern Ireland Fire Service and has proven to be very successful there. The Primary Schools Programme (PSP) has been designed to enhance the level of awareness of Fire Safety in the home and to raise the level of awareness of Fire Safety in the community.

The objective of this programme is to deliver Fire Safety education to 53,000, 3rd class, primary school children (approx. 9 years old) in approximately 3,300 schools across the country. The school children are expected, as part of their homework, to interact with their families on the elements of the programme this should ensure that Fire Safety issues in homes are more likely to be addressed.

The presentation aims to teach children the following aspects of Fire Safety in the Home

  • The dangers of fire and the importance of basic fire prevention – “Home Safety Check”
  • The importance of owning sufficient, properly fitted and regularly tested smoke alarms.
  • The importance of a night-time routine check
  • The importance of escape plans and regular rehearsals.
  • The correct actions to be taken if in a fire situation.
  • The correct procedure for calling the emergency services (999/112).
  • Depending on the history of the area
  • The dangers and consequences of “Hoax Calls”
  • The dangers and consequences of “False Alarms”
  • The dangers and consequences of “Arson”
  • The dangers and consequences of “Attacks on fire crews”
  • The importance of informing their family and friends of this education
  • “Stop, Drop and Roll”
