Traveller Accommodation
Wicklow County Council is responsible for the housing needs of the travelling
community within its functional area and included in the Traveller Accommodation Programme.
The Council continues with the provision of traveller accommodation with the completion of a six-unit
group housing scheme at Kilcoole, a halting bay site at Vale Road, Arklow, and a four-unit
group housing scheme at Rathnew. Refurbishment of the existing six bay halting site at Ballinteskin,
Wicklow has also taken place.
It is proposed to redevelop and refurbish the existing 5 bay Silverbridge Halting site in Bray
with a view to improving the living accommodation and facilities on site. This will be subject to
the relevant funding being available from the Department of the Environment Heritage and Local
Government.
The Traveller Accommodation Plan 2005 – 2008 was adopted. This was carried out by the Traveller
Accommodation Committee and the Council in conjunction with the Committee continued to implement the
objectives of the Plan. The Committee is chaired by Councillor John McManus and the current members
are drawn from the four Local Authorities, Wicklow County Council, Bray, Arklow and Wicklow Town Council
both officials and elected representatives), Representatives from the Bray and Wicklow Travellers
Development Network.
