Licensing of Goods Trailers
New or imported trailers and semi-trailers with a design gross vehicle weight over 3,500kg (equivalent to 1 ½ tons unladen weight)
used for the carriage of goods are required to be licensed by the motor tax office. The requirement does not apply to agriculture
trailers (i.e. trailers the property of persons engaged in agriculture which are designed and used primarily for work on the land
and which are used on a public road only incidentally to such work). Trailers used by the Defence Forces/Garda Siochana are also excluded.
The period of the licence is twelve months.
For first licensing of a new trailer the following will be required
- A fully completed and signed Trailer/Semi-Trailer Form TF100
- A fully completed and signed Trailer/Semi-Trailer Identification Certificate Form TF300 this form should be completed by the manufacturer/assembler of
the Trailer or their authorised agent
- Fee of €60
For first licensing of an imported trailer the following will be required
- A fully completed and signed Trailer/Semi-Trailer Form TF100
- A fully completed and signed Trailer/Semi-Trailer Identification Certificate Form TF300 this form should be completed by the manufacturer/assembler of
the Trailer or their authorised agent
- Certificate of roadworthiness or DOE Pass Statement
- Fee of €60
For renewing the licence the following will be required
- A fully completed and signed Trailer/Semi-Trailer Form TF100
- Licence card TF5
- Certificate of roadworthiness
- A fully completed and signed Trailer/Semi-Trailer Identification Certificate Form TF300 this form should be completed by the
manufacturer/assembler of the Trailer or their authorised agent, if trailer weight changed since last licensing
- No fee applicable
For notifying a change of particulars the following will be required
- A fully completed and signed Trailer/Semi-Trailer Form TF100
- Licence card TF5
For notifying the sale of a trailer the following will be required
- Fully completed and signed notification of transfer form TF200
- Licence card TF5 submitted by the new owner
For notifying that a trailer has been scrapped/destroyed/exported
- Notify motor tax office in writing
- Surrender Licence card TF5
For a replacement trailer licensing card TF5 the following is required
- Application form RF134
- Fee of €6

If the manufacturers/assemblers/authorised agent certification is not available, then the applicant must certify these
details or a certification from a garage may be requested

All Trailers that have been registered for one year or more must hold a current Certificate Of Roadworthiness if in use on the
public roads. The fee of €13 applies for the conversion of the DOE Pass Statement to a Certificate of Roadworthiness

Please note that all Trailers/Semi Trailers must be renewed annually from the date of first registration. This is done by
completing and signing Trailer/Semi-Trailer Form TF100 and submitting this Form, along with the Trailer Licence Card, to your local office

The fee for the initial registration of a trailer is €60. The fee for trailer licence renewal has been abolished for periods on or after
1st April 2001 under the Road Traffic (Licensing of Trailers and Semi-Trailers (Amendment) Regulations, 2001. A legal requirement to
renew the trailer licence together with the submission of a valid certificate of roadworthiness for the trailer still applies even allowing
for the fact that there is no fee required.
