Private Vehicles Motor Tax

At the moment Motor Tax Offices do not request NCT certificates. Customers are advised however that they are still obliged to have their vehicle NCT tested even though the Motor Tax office is not looking for same. Vehicles over 4 years old must have valid NCT and then every two years after.

Documentation required for first time taxing of a brand new or newly imported private vehicle

  • Form RF100. In the case of a new vehicle this document is received by the customer from the garage of purchase, for imported vehicles from the Revenue Commissioners
  • Confirmation of current insurance details
  • Appropriate Fee

When the vehicle has been taxed for the first time, a Vehicle Registration Certificate will then be issued to the owner by the Vehicle Registration Unit

Note: The vehicle is due to be taxed from the first day of the month of its registration with the Revenue Commissioners. However, if the tax is a month or more overdue, but the vehicle was off the road for a whole calendar month, the owner is not liable for arrears of tax. In order to have a period of non use recorded the owner will need to complete the Non-Use Period section of the form and have it witnessed at a Garda Station.

Documentation required when renewing motor tax on a private vehicle where there is no change in the registered owners’ particulars or the vehicle particulars

  • Computerised reminder Motor Tax Renewal Form RF100B. This is the reminder form received from the Vehicle Registration Unit approximately 2 weeks before the tax on the vehicle expires

or

  • Form RF100A should be used in any of the following circumstances, namely :
    • For vehicles with an arrears period
    • Declare a period of non use
    • Where the computerised reminder Form RF100B has not been received from the Vehicle Registration Unit.
  • Confirmation of current insurance details
  • Appropriate Fee

Note: If the tax has lapsed for a month or more, the owner is required to pay arrears and complete the form RF100A. However, if the tax is a month or more overdue, but the vehicle was off the road for an entire month the owner is not liable for arrears of tax. In order to have a period of non use recorded the owner will need to complete the Non-Use Period section of the form and have it witnessed at a Garda Station.

Documentation required when renewing motor tax on a Private Vehicle where there is a change in the registered owners’ particulars

  • Form RF100A including new address is applicable
  • Confirmation of current insurance details
  • Appropriate Fee
  • In order to modify the registered owners’ details they will need to complete the relevant section of the vehicle ownership papers and submit same to the local motor tax office i.e. Vehicle Registration Certificate, Vehicle Licensing Certificate of Registration (Log) Book.

Note: If the registered owner holds a Vehicle Licensing Certificate or a Vehicle Registration Certificate for the vehicle, the details of the new name and/or address should be entered on the reverse side of this document: The document should be sent to The Vehicle Registration Unit, Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, Shannon Town Centre, Co. Clare.

The new details will be updated and the replacement Vehicle Registration Certificate will be sent to you outlining the changes in due course.

If the registered owner holds a Registration (Log) Book for the vehicle it must be updated at the Motor Taxation Office together with a note detailing the change of name and/or address. The details will then be updated and the Registration (Log) Book will be returned to the owner.
