When do I need a Certificate of Roadworthiness?
A Certificate of Roadworthiness is required for certain vehicles namely:
- Mechanically propelled vehicles, registered for one year or more, used for the carriage of passengers with
more than 8 seats, not including the driver e.g. Buses.
- Goods vehicles, registered for one year or more, having a design gross vehicle weight of not exceeding 3,500 kg
(to be tested as light goods vehicles).
- Goods vehicles and trailers, registered for one year or more, having a design gross vehicle weight of over 3,500 kg
(to be tested as heavy goods vehicles).
- Ambulances and all emergency vehicles, registered for one year or more
- Recovery vehicles
- Mobile workshops or vehicles taxed at the mobile workshop tax class which have is body type classified as a van.
A current Certificate of Road Worthiness (CRW) is required for all vehicles
over 1 year old. If no CRW exists, the vehicle must be tested at an appropriate test centre.
On passing the test, the applicant receives a Certificate of Vehicle Fitness (Pass Statement)
and this, together with the appropriate fee is exchanged at the Motor Tax Office for a CRW.
The fee for a CRW is €6 for vehicle under 3500 kgs (DGVW). and €13 for vehicle over 3500kgs (DGVW).
Once tested a CRW lasts for a period of one year.
If you do not have a current Certificate of Roadworthiness for a vehicle that would be included in any of the categories listed above, you cannot tax the vehicle. You must have the vehicle tested by an Authorised Tester.
A list of Authorised Testers in your area is available from your local Motor Taxation Office
It should be noted that a Certificate of Roadworthiness can be recorded against vehicle regardless of tax
class with the exception of vehicles taxed at the private class.
When the vehicle has passed the test, the Garage will give a Test Pass Statement. This is not the Certificate of Roadworthiness. This pass statement must be produced at the Motor Tax Office with a fee of €6 for vehicle under 3500 kgs
and €13 for vehicle over 3500kgs in order to obtain the CRW.
Heavy Goods Vehicle - over 3,500 kgs
Once this vehicle is over one year old it must be tested for Roadworthiness by one of the garages listed.
On production of a Test Centre Pass Statement, this office will then issue a Certificate of Road Worthiness which is valid for one year.
The fee for a Certificate of Roadworthiness is €13
Light Goods Vehicle - 3,500 kgs or less
Once this vehicle is over 1 year old it must be tested for Roadworthiness by one of the garages listed. On production of a Test Centre Pass Statement, this office will then issue a Certificate of Road Worthiness which is valid for one year.
