Arklow to Shillelagh Greenway Update - Completion of Phase 2 and Publication of the Preferred Route

Wicklow County Council is progressing the development of the Arklow to Shillelagh Greenway in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Department of Transport.

The project aims to provide a high-quality dedicated cycling and walking recreation facility which links the towns of Arklow, Woodenbridge, Aughrim, Tinahely and Shillelagh.  The project team are progressing the planning and design of the project in accordance with the TII Project Management Guidelines.

The Options Study Phase of the project has concluded with the confirmation of the preferred options to be brought forward to the design and environmental evaluation phase. The Options Study Report and plan drawings of the preferred option are available on the project website, www.wicklowgreenways.ie

The preferred route option will be further refined and developed into preliminary designs over the coming months. Once the preliminary designs are sufficiently advanced, landowners affected by the proposed Greenway scheme will be consulted to understand their needs and concerns, and to develop design solutions that minimise disturbance where possible, particularly regarding access arrangements and accommodation works.

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan said, “Completion of this Phase marks an important milestone in delivering a safe, scenic and fully connected Greenway for the South of County Wicklow.”

Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, Emer O’Gorman, commented that, “The Arklow to Shillelagh route has the potential to strengthen our rural towns, support local tourism and provide new opportunities for active travel. We look forward to working with local landowners and communities as the design progresses.”
