Pay Your Motor Tax

Important information on how to pay your motor tax.

It is a legal requirement in Ireland to have motor tax in order to drive your vehicle in a public place and you must display the current vehicle licence (tax disc) on the windscreen of your vehicle. Motor tax discs are issued for periods of three, six or 12 calendar months. Arrears become payable at a monthly rate of one tenth of the annual rate from one month after your tax renewal date.

Online payments at www.motortax.ie

The online motor tax service enables vehicle owners to pay their motor tax by secure link over the internet. You can access the motor tax online service with your PIN; the vehicle insurance details and details of your debit/credit card will also be required to renew your motor tax.

How to find your PIN:

If you are taxing a brand-new or imported vehicle online for the first time the PIN is the last SIX characters of the VIN (Chassis No.).

When taxing a secondhand (taxed before) vehicle, your PIN is the last six digits of your current Vehicle Registration Certificate Number.

A PIN is included in your RF100B renewal notice, which is issued from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in Shannon in the month of expiry of your current disc (or current vehicle off-road declaration).

NOTE: Some vehicles are not suitable for online taxing, eg public service vehicles, first time taxing of goods vehicles, and first time taxing of goods vehicles on change of ownership, where there is a change in particulars, eg engine, colour etc.

Renewing by post

Use Form RF100B to renew your motor tax by post – you can use your preferred method of payment whether that is bank draft, cheque, postal order or money order, or by completing the credit card details section on the form. Please do not send cash via the postal system.

If you need to pay arrears, you must use Form RF100A and complete these details on the form. You can then send the completed form by post with your preferred method of payment.

Cheques should be made payable to Wicklow County Council and the completed form and payment should be sent to:
