On 12 November 2015, Wicklow started its Age Friendly journey through the establishment and first meeting of the County Wicklow Age Friendly Alliance. Members of the alliance include Bray Area Partnership, County Wicklow Partnership, County Wicklow Network for Older People, County Wicklow Citizens Information, the HSE, An Garda Síochána and Wicklow County Council. The Wicklow Programme is part of the national Age Friendly Cities and Counties Programme, which is now operational in all 31 local authority areas in the country.
The establishment of the Alliance is just the beginning, however, and it is important that all the structures are put in place. Below is a diagram of the Wicklow Age Friendly structure:
The County Wicklow Age Friendly Programme has developed a Strategy and Action Plan that follows guidelines set down by the national Age Friendly Cities and Counties Programme. Central to this Strategy’s development was an extensive consultation and survey of older people throughout the county looking at their needs and agreeing actions that will make real change to the lives of older people at a local and county level. The Programme will therefore be looking for further imput and contribution to the implementation of the Strategy.
The Age Friendly Strategy 2017-2022 was launched by Minister for Health, Simon Harris at the County Wicklow Older Persons Council AGM on 26 May 2017. Minister Harris gave a speech on the day alongside talks from a collection of speakers. County Librarian Brendan Martin gave a presentation on the many libraries and library service in Co Wicklow, while Wicklow Crime Prevention Officer John Gill discussed safety and security. The presentations and AGM were followed by a lunch and tea dance, an opportunity for different age friendly groups across the county to gather and chat.
The Age Friendly Programme in Wicklow holds events throughout the year including the AGM and yearly Seminar, which are attended by older people from across Co Wicklow.
