Photo of Charlie BirdCllr Aoife Flynn Kennedy, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, has opened an online Book of Condolence, to give the community an opportunity to express their sympathies to the family of Charlie Bird who sadly passed away on Monday 11th March 2024.

Cllr Flynn Kennedy stated:  “As Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council I wish to express my heartfelt sympathies and condolences to Charlie’s wife Claire, daughters Orla and Nessa, grandchildren Abigail, Charlie, Edward, Harriet and Hugo, his three brothers, wider family and his friends. There are no words for the sadness we are all feeling at this time. Charlie made an enormous contribution to Irish Society in his outstanding achievements in the field of broadcasting and journalism and more recently in his campaigning and raising funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.

Charlie was conferred with the Freedom of County Wicklow by Wicklow County Council on the 26th September 2022 in recognition of this work.  On behalf of the people of County Wicklow I extend our deepest condolences and sympathies.

Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive, added: “On behalf of the elected members and staff of Wicklow County Council I wish to extend our sincere sympathies to the family of Charlie Bird and to acknowledge his courage and bravery in his fight against Motor Neurone Disease. Charlie brought honour to not only himself and his family but to the people of Wicklow. The thoughts and prayers of the community of County Wicklow are with Charlie’s wife, family and friends at this sad time.”

Closing date of the online Book of Condolences is the 31st March 2024.
