Litter is anything from a cigarette butt or cigarette packaging to takeaway packaging, drink cans, plastic and glass bottles, chewing gum and wrappers - you name it, the list is endless. Items left on the ground at bottle banks and recycling centres are also litter!

Leaving or throwing litter in a public place is an offence that is subject to an on-the-spot fine of €150 or a maximum fine of €3,000 in court. The council is also entitled to be awarded costs incurred in the investigation, clean-up and prosecution of cases.
