Carnew Town Team formed under Town Centre First Initiative

An official Carnew Town Team was recently formed following successful public information and formation meetings held under the Town Centre First Initiative.

The Town Centre First policy aims to support the development of town centres as viable, vibrant and attractive places where people can live, work and visit. It also seeks to ensure that towns continue to serve as social, cultural and recreational hubs for their communities. The policy recognises that every town is unique and it is important that each Town Team reflects the specific character and needs of its community.

Members of the public, which included local residents, business owners, local groups and stakeholders, were invited to attend the public information and town formation meetings to learn about the role of a Town Team and how they could support local development and community - led initiatives. Attendees were invited to complete an Expression of Interest form to indicate their interest in joining the Town Team.

The strong level of community interest and participation resulted in the successful creation of the Carnew Town Team, which will work collaboratively with community organisations, local stakeholders and Wicklow County Council to help shape the future of the town. Five dedicated working groups were established and the executive committee members were elected with the aim to help drive positive change across the town. These working groups will play a key role in identifying both the challenges and opportunities facing Carnew and in exploring new funding streams for projects that will enhance the town.

Stephen Clarke, Town Regeneration Officer, Wicklow County Council, remarked, “We are delighted with the level of enthusiasm shown by the Carnew community. The newly established Carnew Town Team will play an essential role in driving positive change, strengthening local identity and supporting future projects that will benefit residents, businesses and visitors alike. We look forward to supporting the newly formed team and working together to enhance the town of Carnew.  I would also like to thank the national and local elected representatives who attended the Town Team meetings and offered their continued support”.

Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, Emer O’Gorman, welcomed the Town Team formation, stating, “The establishment of the Carnew Town Team is a positive and progressive step and is a major milestone in the town’s ongoing regeneration. I also wish to pay tribute to the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht who provide the crucial funding for the Town Centre First policy. Through their commitment, they are empowering communities to take ownership of their future, revitalise their local centres whilst creating more vibrant and sustainable communities”.

The organisers wish to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who recently attended both public consultation sessions, engaged in discussions and submitted an Expression of Interest. The contribution and commitment of local people have been vital in establishing this new community - led team.
