Official Opening of Ireland’s largest Pump Track at The Murrough, Wicklow Town
A large crowd gathered at The Murrough, Wicklow Town, on Saturday, 15th November, to celebrate the official opening of The Murrough Pump Track which is a landmark addition to Ireland’s outdoor recreation facilities.
The event was filled with excitement as pump track enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels took to the track for the first time, showcasing the energy and community spirit that brought this project to life.
At 230m of main track and an additional 50m beginner’s track, The Murrough Pump Track now stands as the largest facility of its kind in Ireland, offering a total of 280 linear metres of track. It is also the first in the country to include a dedicated advanced line, designed to challenge experienced users while remaining welcoming to beginners and families.
This brand new Velosolutions pump track is free to use and open to all, providing a safe space for cyclists, skateboarders, scooter riders and rollerbladers to enjoy year-round.
The project was a collaborative initiative involving the Wicklow Town Team, Wicklow Municipal District and Wicklow County Council, with construction carried out by Trailbreaker, a local company based in Roundwood.
Funding for this project was awarded from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht under the 2023 Town and Village Renewal Scheme.
The opening ceremony featured official speeches and a ribbon-cutting led by Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan, alongside Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District, Cllr. Graham Richmond, District Manager Brian Gleeson, and Chairperson of the Wicklow Town Team, Myra Porter. The ceremony was followed by a demonstration on the track by skilled local pump track enthusiasts.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan, remarked “It is a tremendous honour to officially open The Murrough Pump Track, a facility that reflects the energy, ambition and spirit of Wicklow. This project shows what can be achieved when community, local expertise and Wicklow County Council come together. The pump track is not only a world class sports facility but also a vibrant space for families, young people and pump track enthusiasts of all levels to come together, stay active and enjoy the outdoors.”
Cllr. Graham Richmond, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District, said “This is a proud day for Wicklow Town and the wider community. The Murrough Pump Track adds a new dimension to the town’s amenities and offers a fun, healthy and social way to spend time outdoors. I want to thank everyone who was involved from the Wicklow Town Team to Trailbreaker and the Council staff who supported this project from beginning to end. This pump track will be a source of pride and enjoyment for generations to come.”
