Update: Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk

Statement from Wicklow County Council - Thursday, 12th February 2026

The Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk Management Committee met on Wednesday, 11th February 2026.  The Committee received a presentation from RPS Consultants Ltd.

The presentation focused on the route options selection on the Greystones side and a progress update on detailed slope investigations and methodology required for the Bray side.

A comprehensive discussion ensued and the members of the Committee discussed potential alternative engineering solutions and possible means to expedite the delivery of this project.  RPS advised that they are examining any options that could possibly reduce the timeline of the project and this was welcomed by all present.

Wicklow County Council will now commence discussions with affected landowners in relation to the proposed rerouting on the Greystones side and will also progress the appointment of a specialist contractor to carry out detailed investigations of the slopes of concern identified in the RPS report, following confirmation of the methodology by RPS, and subject to possible environmental considerations.

The members received a comprehensive report from a member of the committee which examined the possibility of early reopening of the Cliff Walk by the Council by advising the public of the risks and the actions they should take themselves to mitigate these risks.  The report also highlighted the benefits of a Council protocol for monitoring, inspection and enhanced advice to the public.

The members welcomed the report and acknowledged the significant effort and time that went into its preparation.  As recommended in the report, Wicklow County Council obtained independent legal advice on this matter.  The legal advice stated that a full assessment of risk has to be carried out and until the Council is satisfied that they are not permitting an unacceptable safety risk for users of the Cliff Walk, the Cliff Walk ought to remain closed. The Council and the Committee will keep this under review and seek updated legal advice on this matter as the project progresses.

Chairperson of the Committee, Councillor Erika Doyle welcomed the progress to date and reiterated that the Committee is united in its aim of working with Wicklow County Council towards safely reopening the Cliff Walk in a in a diligent, safe and environmentally sound manner and in the shortest possible timeframe.

She stated, “The Committee is proving to be a useful forum for input from our community and elected representatives, and robust discussion is taking place on the processes involved in working towards solutions to reopening the Cliff Walk.  Our primary objective remains safely reopening the Cliff Walk, even partially, in the shortest timeframe possible, while obviously adhering to the necessary statutory processes.  My thanks to the Council staff, RPS and stakeholder representatives for their work and ongoing commitment. We will meet again in late February where we will review progress and discuss next steps.”

Wicklow County Council is committed to progressing with the project.

The Cliff Walk remains closed due to the significant safety concerns.
