Wicklow County Council is encouraging people of all ages to get out and enjoy nature during National Biodiversity Week, taking place from Friday 15th to Sunday 24th May 2026.
Coinciding with the first year of implementation of the Wicklow Biodiversity Action Plan 2026–2031, the week offers an opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting and enhancing biodiversity across the county, while inviting people to connect with nature in a simple and accessible way.
With longer days and spring in full colour, there is no better time to celebrate Wicklow’s rich natural heritage, from coastal habitats and uplands to the biodiversity found in our towns and villages.
A range of events will take place across the country as part of National Biodiversity Week, including a number supported by Wicklow County Council:
- Thursday 21st May | 6.45pm – 7.45pm | Arklow Librar
Life on the Wing - Swift Walk & Talk with Oran O’Sullivan
- Thursday 21st May | 9am – 12pm | The Orchard Centre, Tinahely
Nurturing Nature – A Celebration of Women in Farming in partnership with Wicklow Uplands Council and Wicklow IFA
- Friday 22nd May | 7pm | Raheen Car Park, Bray Head
Plants on the Edge – Walk & Talk on the flora of Bray Head
These events offer an opportunity to explore local habitats, learn about species found in Wicklow, and hear from those working to support biodiversity across the county. All events are free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and appropriate footwear and clothing are advised.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Cllr. Melanie Corrigan added, “Spring is one of the best times of year to experience nature in Wicklow. I would encourage people to take part in Biodiversity Week and enjoy the variety of wildlife and habitats that make the county so special.”
Theresa O’Brien, Director of Services, Wicklow County Council, said, “Biodiversity Week provides a valuable opportunity to highlight the importance of our natural heritage and to encourage people to engage with it locally. Even small actions and increased awareness can play an important role in supporting biodiversity.”
Further events are taking place nationwide throughout the week. Full details can be found on the National Biodiversity Week website: https://biodiversityweek.ie/events/
