New WCMX Chair Launches at Greystones Skate Park

Promoting Inclusive Access to Action Sports at Shoreline Sports Park, Charlesland

The Wicklow Sports & Recreation Partnership, in collaboration with Shoreline Leisure, is proud to announce the launch of a new WCMX (Wheelchair Motocross) chair rental service at the Skate Park, located in Shoreline Sports Park, Charlesland, Greystones.

This initiative promotes inclusivity and accessibility in action sports by offering a specially designed WCMX chair and ramp for free rental through the Shoreline Leisure website.

WCMX is an adaptive sport where athletes use purpose-built wheelchairs to perform tricks on skatepark ramps, similar to BMX or skateboarding. These chairs are engineered for high-impact stunts, providing enhanced manoeuvrability, suspension and durability.

The project was inspired by Milo, Ireland’s first wheelchair motocross (WCMX) skater, who approached Shoreline Leisure Sports Park Manager Johnny Dunne about introducing a WCMX chair to the Greystones Skate Park. When the new chair was presented at the Skate Park, Milo demonstrated its capabilities, illustrating how accessible skateparks can open up new opportunities for wheelchair users to enjoy sport and movement.

Cllr. Caroline Winstanley, Leas Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, stated: “This is a fantastic step forward for inclusivity in County Wicklow. The introduction of a WCMX chair at the Greystones Skate Park ensures that people of all abilities can take part.”

Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, added: “We are proud to support projects that remove barriers to participation. This partnership between Wicklow Sports & Recreation Partnership and Shoreline Leisure reflects our commitment to creating active, inclusive communities across the county.”

Johnny Dunne, Shoreline Leisure Sports Park Manager, remarked: “When Milo first approached us about this idea, we knew it was something special. We’re delighted to now have a WCMX chair and ramp available for anyone to try, free of charge, at the Skate Park.”

Aisling Hubbard, Coordinator of Wicklow Sports & Recreation Partnership, commented: “This project is about giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy physical activity in their own way. Seeing Milo demonstrate what’s possible has been truly inspiring, and we’re delighted to help make this happen in Wicklow.”

Please note that only WCMX chairs are permitted within the Skate Park areas for safety reasons.

The WCMX chair and ramp can be booked free of charge via the Shoreline Leisure website: https://www.shorelineleisure.ie/sportspark-skate-park
