Tánaiste Simon Harris Officially Opens The Rockey Road Improvement Scheme

This morning, Tánaiste Simon Harris visited his local constituency to officially open the Rockey Road Improvement Scheme. This project will enhance pedestrian facilities and improve road safety on the Rockey Road in Wicklow Town.

A significant investment of €1.3 million has been allocated, funded by the Department of Transport, highlighting the importance of this initiative. The construction was completed in the third quarter of 2025, and the Rockey Road reopened to the public on 15th October 2025.

Key features of the project include:

  • Realigning the existing road to achieve a constant width of 5.5 meters
  • Enhancing safety for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists
  • Installing 420 meters of new footpath stretching from the Carrig Beag Housing Development to the M11
  • Adding 17 new public lights, one zebra crossing, two speed ramps and two speed driver feedback signs

This project aims to significantly improve road conditions and provide an alternative route that caters to residential developments along the Wicklow Town Outer Relief Road. This will help alleviate traffic congestion on main routes leading into and out of Wicklow Town and Rathnew.

At the official opening, Tánaiste Simon Harris remarked, “The opening of the Rockey Road Improvement Scheme marks a transformative step for Wicklow and Rathnew—reducing congestion, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and strengthening the connection between our communities for generations to come. This project is a testament to what can be achieved through local leadership, government support and community cooperation.”

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Cllr. Melanie Corrigan, added, “We were delighted that An Tánaiste could join us in Wicklow Town to officially open the Rockey Road Improvement Scheme. This scheme has brought essential road safety improvements and introduced new pedestrian facilities that will benefit everyone who lives, works and travels in our community.”

Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council Emer O’Gorman, commented, “On behalf of Wicklow County Council, we are delighted with the investment from the Department of Transport for this Improvement Scheme. I want to thank all those who worked on the Scheme. Your commitment and professionalism have delivered a safer, better road for the people of Wicklow.’
