Update: Black Castle Public Consultation
Community Shapes The Future Of The Public Lands Surrounding Wicklow's Iconic Black Castle
Wicklow County Council and the Wicklow Town Team, in collaboration with the appointed consultants Studio Idir, were delighted with the attendance at the second Black Castle Public Consultation held recently on Thursday, September 18th, at Wicklow Library. This event followed a community engagement day held previously in August, where local residents, groups and community representatives were asked to share their ideas and suggestions regarding how best to enhance the public lands surrounding Black Castle.
Having reviewed and analysed all feedback previously shared at the community engagement day, Studio Idir returned and presented multiple draft design proposals and 3D visuals to over 60 attendees.
Those present were once again asked to share their views and feedback on the presented proposals. Discussions focused on key themes that emerged, which included improving accessibility, preserving heritage, supporting biodiversity, expanding recreation opportunities and creating sustainable visitor facilities.
Following this consultation, Studio Idir will refine the design proposals based on input received from those who attended, and this feedback will inform the development of a draft design Masterplan, which will be shared with the community for further review before final decisions are made. This final Public Consultation will take place on Thursday, 9th October, from 3 - 6 pm, on the top floor of Wicklow Library.
This initiative is funded by the Town and Village Renewal Scheme through the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. It is part of a larger project to develop a comprehensive design plan aimed at enhancing the public lands surrounding Black Castle. The project also includes an assessment of the condition and structure of the Black Castle ruins as part of the overall site strategy.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District, Cllr. Graham Richmond remarked, “I am pleased to see such strong public engagement at the second Public Consultation. It is encouraging that the community’s voice is shaping the future of the Black Castle site. It is vital that we safeguard our heritage whilst developing inclusive public spaces.”
Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council Emer O’Gorman commented, “This collaboration between the elected members, the Town Team, the Town Regeneration Office and local residents allows us to explore new opportunities to protect and enhance this landmark, ensuring it remains a focal point of both local pride and tourism whilst preserving the legacy of Black Castle. It also demonstrates how national initiatives such as the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and Town Centre First can be effectively implemented at local level with strong community input.”
If you missed the event yesterday, please follow this link HERE, to view the presentation that was shared and to leave your feedback and comments on the proposals. We ask that you kindly provide any feedback by Thursday 25th September.
