A NEW ERA FOR WICKLOW GAOL: OPERATOR TENDER NOW OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS

Wicklow County Council is pleased to announce that the tender for the new Wicklow Gaol operator is now officially published and open for submissions. This marks a significant step towards securing the long-term future of this important heritage and tourism asset.

Key Dates and Reference Information:

  • Publication Date: Thursday, 23rd October
  • Submission Deadline: Thursday, 13th November at 5pm
  • eTenders Reference: 6844594

Following the recent temporary closure for essential structural maintenance, and the natural conclusion of the previous operator's contract, the Council is now actively seeking proposals from a new management partner to build on the Gaol's strong foundations. This critical step shifts the focus to the selection process, ensuring a smooth transition towards a new era of growth for the historic site.

The Council is seeking an experienced and innovative operator who can realise the full potential of the Gaol. The new operating contract offers exceptional opportunities for the successful partner to implement a fresh vision for Wicklow Gaol, including the development of updated, immersive visitor experiences and maximising commercial potential through expanded food, beverage and other offerings. The newly appointed operator will be key stakeholder in developing diverse programming, such as themed seasonal events and community festivals, which are vital for positioning the Gaol as a major catalyst for tourism and community benefits throughout Wicklow and beyond.

For tourism, the goal is to elevate Wicklow Gaol's status as a must-visit destination, attracting a higher number of national and international visitors. The enhanced offerings and improved facilities will encourage longer stays in Wicklow Town, providing a significant boost to local businesses and the broader county economy.

For the community of Wicklow, the Gaol will serve as a vibrant cultural hub. The new operator will be encouraged to explore opportunities for greater local engagement, including educational programs, partnerships with local history groups, and utilising the space for community-led festivals and events, ensuring the Gaol remains at the heart of the town.

Cllr. Melanie Corrigan, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, stated, “We are committed to delivering a long-term future for Wicklow Gaol that respects its history while maximising its potential. This tender is an open invitation to experienced partners to help us create a world-class attraction that benefits our local community and county. We look forward to receiving innovative proposals.”

Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, added, “The publication of the tender marks a pivotal moment. The focus is now on selecting a new operator who will ensure Wicklow Gaol is fully prepared to capitalise on its various opportunities, ready to welcome visitors and serve our community for the next summer tourist season and well into the future.”
