Summer Stars is a free national reading programme for children that takes place in all public libraries across Ireland each summer. Running from 12th June to 30th August 2025, the programme invites children throughout County Wicklow to join in the fun and enjoy reading some of the fantastic books and eBooks available to borrow for free from their local library.
Summer Stars is non-competitive, and every child who reads even one book or eBook is considered to have completed the programme!
Getting involved is easy. Simply visit your local Wicklow library with your child and register from 12th June onwards.
Children can enjoy a wide range of reading materials, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, Graphic novels, Comics and Magazines. All are free to borrow through Wicklow Libraries, and the Summer Stars BorrowBox collection offers a fantastic range of children’s eBooks and eAudiobooks to browse, borrow, read, and listen to via the BorrowBox app.
Taking part in Summer Stars encourages children to keep reading over the school holidays, helping them maintain and even improve their reading skills. Research shows that children who read during the summer return to school in September with a clear advantage in literacy compared to those who don’t.
Wicklow County Council Library Service is looking forward to welcoming you at your local library to enjoy the Summer Stars Reading Adventure together.
