Clara Glens U13S Host Michael Dwyer's In Inaugural Memorial Cup Match

On Saturday, 7th June 2025, Clara Glens U13s proudly welcomed their juvenile counterparts from Michael Dwyer’s GAA Club to Ballinacor Community Park for the inaugural Michael Dwyer 200 Memorial Cup. This fixture marks the beginning of the commemorative events leading up to the Michael Dwyer Bicentennial Commemoration in August.

A spirited and skilful game of football was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd, as both young teams displayed impressive talent and determination. The match was expertly officiated by All-Ireland referee John Keenan, ensuring fair play throughout.

In a closely fought encounter it was Michael Dwyer’s who narrowly edged victory on the day. Their captain, Dillion Cullen, proudly lifted the Memorial Cup to cheers from his teammates, coaches and supporters.

The event served as a fitting prelude to the extensive commemorations planned for August, highlighting the historical and cultural significance of Michael Dwyer’s legacy in County Wicklow and beyond.

Cllr Pat Kennedy, Cathaoirleach of the Arklow Municipal District, praised the young players, stating, “Both teams displayed tremendous talent on the pitch. It was an exciting game of football, full of heart. Each player did their team and community proud.”

Wicklow County Council Chief Executive Emer O’Gorman expressed pride in the Council’s sponsorship of the event, saying, “We’re proud to support the Michael Dwyer 200 Memorial Cup as part of our bicentenary program. It’s important to involve all ages in remembering our heritage, especially our young people.”

Leonora Earls, Arklow Municipal District Manager, also shared her thanks: “We are thankful to everyone who helped organize this memorable event — including the mentors, supporters, and volunteers. A special thanks to Leah Hanlon, whose heartfelt performance of Amhrán na bhFiann made the event even more meaningful.”

This match is part of a larger program of events planned to celebrate Michael Dwyer.

The Michael Dwyer 200 event is a two-day commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the death of the famous ‘Wicklow Chief’ and 1798 leader, Michael Dwyer. This Heritage Week event is scheduled for 23rd and 24th August Glenmalure, with more details to be available in the coming weeks.
