Bike Week Festival Brings Energy and Excitement to Wicklow Town

Wicklow Town buzzed with activity on Thursday, 15th May as hundreds of people gathered at Murrough Car Park to participate in the 2025 Bike Week Festival. Organised by the Wicklow Sports & Recreation Partnership and funded by the National Transport Authority, the festival provided a vibrant day filled with cycling-themed activities, all free of charge.

This year’s festival marked the highly anticipated return of the StreetVelodrome, which was a standout attraction during last year’s Bike Week event in Blessington. Adding to the excitement was an outdoor spin class coordinated by Coral Leisure Wicklow, while the Sports Room offered hands-on support with a bike maintenance station. A lively bike skills zone allowed younger participants to test their abilities, and a sensory pod bus provided a calming space for those who needed a quiet moment.

Speaking at the festival, Cathaoirleach Cllr. Paul O’Brien praised the initiative’s community impact: “It’s fantastic to see so many families, young people and local residents embracing Bike Week and coming together to celebrate cycling.

Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, emphasised the festival's importance in the county’s sustainability goals: “Cycling is a key part of our climate and active travel strategies. The Bike Week Festival demonstrates how enjoyable and accessible cycling can be and it’s an excellent way to inspire long-term change in how we navigate our towns and communities.

Director of Services at Wicklow County Council, Theresa O’Brien commended the collaborative effort behind the event: “This festival is a brilliant example of what we can achieve when local partners, service providers and national funders unite with a shared vision. The atmosphere here today illustrates how valued these opportunities are by the public.

Aisling Hubbard, Coordinator of Wicklow Sports & Recreation Partnership, expressed her pride in the event’s success: “From the youngest children in the skills zone to adults trying out spin classes or getting their bikes serviced, the engagement was incredible. It’s days like this that remind us of the power of sport and recreation to bring people together.

The Bike Week Festival continues to grow as a flagship celebration in County Wicklow, reinforcing the county’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, active travel, and inclusive community events.
