County Wicklow has played host to a number feature films and television series, including Braveheart, The Tudors, Penny Dreadful, Into the Badlands and Fate: The Winx Saga.

Vikings recounts the exploits of Ragnar Lothbrok, a real-life historical character who was the greatest hero of his day and pushed the boundaries of discovery. Ragnar’s band of Viking brothers and his family’s sagas are told as he climbs to become King of the Viking tribes, and the world of the great Norsemen who plundered, traded, and explored is chronicled. Wicklow is the backdrop for Netflix’s number one show - Vikings: Valhalla. The Netflix Original was created by Michael Hirst and a spin-off of the popular series, Vikings. The brand-new show was filmed at Ashford Studios and around County Wicklow. Netflix released the first series early 2022. Netflix has renewed show for a second and third season.

Battle at Big Rock – A Short Film | Jurassic World https://youtu.be/C7kbVvpOGdQ. A short sequel to Jurassic World was shot in secret in County Wicklow in 2018. The short film stars Moonlight actor André Holland and I-Land star Natalie Martinez, and is set one year after events in the most recent Jurassic World film, ‘Fallen Kingdom’. Powerscourt doubled as a national park in northern California.

Virgin Media’s six-part drama series Darklands navigates suburban gang crime, centred on rival gangs The Hill Crew and The Keegans. The series was filmed and set in the coastal town of Bray, County Wicklow. Read more: https://www.screenireland.ie/directory/view/9475/darklands.

Wicklow Town and its scenic surrounding areas are the main locations for a six part series, The South Westerlies. The series stars acclaimed actors including Orla Brady, Eileen Walsh, Steve Wall, Patrick Bergin and Sorcha Cusack. Produced by Deadpan Pictures (Ireland) in association with RTÉ, Acorn TV with its UK-based development division Acorn Media Enterprises, ZDF Enterprises and Screen Ireland. A new Irish mystery series starring Jane Seymour was filmed in Dublin and Wicklow. Produced by Dynamic Television, Harry Wild is created and written by David Logan (Lost Christmas), with Irish writer Jo Spain (Taken Down). Directors are Ronan Burke (Red Rock) and Rob Burke (Red Rock).

Cocaine Bear, Elizabeth Banks’ forthcoming dark comedy, was filmed in Wicklow. During the summer 2021, Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams visited the County while filming in Greystones and Enniskerry for the upcoming Disney sequel Disenchanted.

Netflix’s teen fantasy drama Fate: The Winx Saga, which will return for its second season to the streaming platform along with screen adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s 2016 novel The Wonder – a psychological thriller set in a small Irish village seven years after the Great Famine ended where shot in County Wicklow recently.
