Winner Announced for the Children’s My Christmas Story Competition in Arklow

Wicklow County Council is delighted to announce Ronan Russell as the overall winner of this year’s Children’s My Christmas Story Competition, a competition held by Arklow Municipal District in conjunction with Arklow Christmas Festival.  The competition showcased some very talented young writers from across the district. A special presentation took place in Arklow Library, where the winners were presented with a gift pack to celebrate their achievement.

After receiving an impressive number of entries from children of all ages, the judging panel selected this year’s winning story for its imagination, exciting story line and it’s references to the Avoca River and 19 Arches bridge, as well as the overall wonderful sense of Christmas magic. Ronan Russell, the winning entrant, was presented with his prize in Arklow library and he also had the exciting task of switching on the Christmas lights as part of Arklow Christmas Festival.

Speaking about the competition, Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council praised the talent and enthusiasm of the young participants saying, “The imagination shown by our young writers is truly remarkable. We are proud to celebrate their talents and to support opportunities which encourages literacy, creativity and joy in our community—especially at Christmas.”

Cllr. Miriam Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District said, “It is wonderful to see so many children from across the District taking part and expressing themselves through storytelling. Their enthusiasm brings great warmth to the festive season, and I congratulate the winners Ronan, Millie and Julianna and every child who shared their stories with us.”

Leonora Earls, District Manager for Arklow Municipal District added, “Our young authors put enormous effort into their stories, and it was a tough task picking the winner.  Arklow Municipal District look forward to continuing this new tradition and in supporting opportunities which inspire young people to explore their imaginations.”
