“THINK TWICE, THINK BIKE”

Earlier today, South Dublin County Council along with An Garda Síochána, in collaboration with Wicklow County Council, Fingal County Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Meath County Council, and Dublin City Council launched their “Think Twice, Think Bike” campaign.

As summer approaches, more Motorcyclists will be taking to the roads. This high-profile, multi-agency initiative will feature radio and social media campaigns targeting Motorcyclists, highlighting the risks they face on our roads. According to the RSA, there were 30 motorcyclist fatalities on Irish Roads in 2025, compared to 17 in 2024.

The campaign coincides with the May Bank Holiday weekend and will focus on highlighting “Safe Ways” to protect yourself as a Motorcyclist, while encouraging safer road use overall. It will also remind drivers that Motorcyclists are Vulnerable Road Users.

  • To promote safer behaviour and taking responsibility the campaign will include the following tips:
  • Check your bike is in good road worthy condition.
  • Check you are familiar with the operations of your bike.
  • Are you familiar with any changes that may have occurred in relation to the “Rules of the Road” since you last took your Motorcycle out on the road?
  • Before you head out on your first summer trip, get someone to ride with you, effectively shadowing you to ensure you haven’t forgotten your Motorcycle skills since last summer.
  • Ensure you have reflective safety gear, Be Safe Be Seen.

Speaking on the campaign, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan said, “Through the ‘Think Twice, Think Bike’ Campaign, we are urging all road users to be more aware, more considerate, and to make safety a priority every time they travel.”

Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, Emer O’Gorman, commented that: “As we approach the busy May Bank Holiday weekend and the summer months, we are calling on motorcyclists to take simple practical steps to protect themselves on the road. At the same time, we are reminding drivers to look out for motorcyclists and share the road responsibly.”

Road Safety Officer at Wicklow County Council Linda Healy said, “Research has shown that 51% of Motorcyclist fatalities happen at the weekend. This underlines the importance of this campaign, particularly as we approach the May Bank Holiday. We are urging Motorcyclists to take extra care and encouraging drivers to be vigilant, look twice, expect to see Motorcyclists, and prevent further tragedies on our roads.”

Garda Inspector Michelle Byrne from the Wicklow Roads Policing Unit stated, “This campaign demonstrates the strength of a coordinated, multi-agency approach to road safety. An Garda Siochana is delighted to work alongside and support Wicklow County Council and other Local Authorities to deliver a consistent, impactful message: Road Safety is a shared responsibility. Through this joint effort, we are reinforcing the importance of awareness, education and enforcement to better protect motorcyclists and all road users.”
