Greystones South Beach and Brittas Bay Celebrates Blue Flag Ward with Official Flag Raising
Earlier today, Blue Flags were raised at Greystones South Beach, Brittas Bay North and Brittas Bay South by Cathaoirleach of Greystones Municipal District, Cllr. Lourda Scott and Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District Cllr. Graham Richmond. This follows a ceremony earlier this month where the beaches were announced as the 2026 recipients of the Blue Flag Awards by An Taisce. Arklow South Beach earned the National Green Coast Award and was awarded the Green Flag.
The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognized awards for beaches. In order to qualify for this prestigious award, a series of criteria in the areas of facilities, safety, environmental management and education must be met and maintained. Bathing water must also have attained excellent status.
The National Green Coast Award recognises beaches with excellent water quality and are prized for their natural, unspoilt environment. They must be managed in partnership with the local community. Wicklow County Council worked closely with Arklow Coast Care to clean and manage the beach in an environmentally sensitive way.
Commenting on the awards, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan said “I warmly welcome this year’s awards which recognises the exceptional quality and standard of our beaches. I would like to congratulate all those involved on their dedication and commitment.”
Welcoming the announcement Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council Emer O’Gorman said, “These awards are a valued recognition that reflects the ongoing effort and hard work of many of the Council’s departments and Municipal Districts. They are a great source of pride for the County and reinforce Wicklow’s reputation as a leading coastal destination.”
Temporary Toilets have been installed at the Greystones South Beach Car Park for the duration of the Blue Flag season, they will be operational from Saturday 30th May 2026 through to mid-September 2026, everyday.
