Wicklow is set to celebrate Her Outdoors Week 2025 from 11th to 17th August, with a complete programme of outdoor events aimed at getting more women and girls active in their local environment.
This national campaign is designed to support females of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to enjoy the outdoors — and Wicklow’s mix of coastline, trails, and open spaces makes it an ideal setting.
Throughout the week, women and girls can participate in a wide range of outdoor activities around the county. Events include therapeutic horse riding, a guided hike on St. Kevin’s Way with a post-walk sauna and dip, and beginner-friendly introductions to sea swimming, rowing, and sailing, to name a few. All activities are welcoming and accessible, with no pressure and no previous experience required.
A key event on the calendar is the Greystones Beach Festival, returning on Thursday, 14th August, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Greystones South Beach. The evening offers a relaxed introduction to a variety of coastal activities, including sea swimming, paddle boarding tasters, beach yoga, sand callisthenics, and a social 5K walk or run. All equipment will be provided, and booking is encouraged as places are limited.
To support ongoing participation, the Wicklow Trails App has also been launched. This free tool provides route maps, trail ratings, and safety tips for walks throughout the county, enabling users to explore at their own pace and incorporate outdoor activity into their weekly routine.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan welcomed the initiative, saying, “It’s great to see so many local clubs and groups getting involved in Her Outdoors Week. Their support helps create real opportunities for women and girls to try something new right here in their own communities.”
Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, said, “We want to make it easy for women and girls to step into the outdoors, whether that means trying a new activity, meeting others, or simply moving more in nature. This week is about showing that it’s possible and that support is there to help you get started.”
Theresa O’Brien, Director of Service for Climate, Environment, Recreation and Amenity, added, “It’s important that these events are accessible, local and low-barrier. They allow women and girls to explore activity at their own pace in a supportive environment.”
Aisling Hubbard, Coordinator of Wicklow Sports and Recreation Partnership, encouraged participation, saying, “The goal here isn’t just a fun week of activity — it’s encouraging longer-term engagement with the outdoors. Initiatives like this help make that shift feel achievable and enjoyable.”
