MOBY E-bike sharing scheme launches in Wicklow and Rathnew
Wicklow County Council is proud to welcome the arrival of the MOBY e-bike sharing scheme to Wicklow Town and Rathnew—an important step forward in the county’s journey towards smarter travel, lower carbon emissions, and a healthier environment.
Launched on 23rd June 2025, this shared mobility initiative directly supports Wicklow County Council’s Climate Action Plan and the National Sustainable Mobility Policy by offering residents and visitors with a cleaner, more efficient alternative to private car use. With up to 50 electric bikes available across more than 30 locations, the scheme expands low-carbon transport options for communities across these towns.
Making Active Travel Easier and Smarter
Recognising that the hilly terrain in Wicklow can be a barrier to conventional cycling, the Council has partnered with MOBY to offer a practical and accessible solution. E-bikes enable more people to cycle for everyday journeys, such as commuting to work, connecting with public transport, attending school or college, or visiting local amenities.
Each e-bike comes equipped with features that support safer, more convenient travel, including automatic gearing, GPS tracking and long-lasting batteries with a range of up to 70 km. These features make cycling a viable and attractive option for a wider range of users and trip types.
Seamless Integration with Daily Life
E-bike stations are strategically located near public transport hubs, schools, sports centres, tourist sites and residential areas, making it easier than ever to leave the car at home. Users can rent and return bikes through the MOBY MOVE app, with designated parking stands and virtual zones helping to manage the service sustainably. The scheme operates 24/7 with flexible pricing, including pay-per-use options. New users will receive €10 in free ride credit to encourage them to try the service and make the shift toward smarter travel.
Shaping a Low-Carbon Travel Culture
To further support this shift, Wicklow County Council’s Green Team and Climate Action Team will launch a Workplace Travel Survey from 21st July 2025. This survey will form part of the TFI Smarter Travel Behaviour Change Programme and will gather insights into how council staff are adapting their travel habits in light of new mobility options like the MOBY e-bikes available in Bray, Greystones and Wicklow town. In addition to the bike scheme, a shared electric pool car will also be made available at County Buildings. Together, these low-emission transport options aim to reduce car dependency, improve air quality and support the Council’s targets outlined in its Climate Action Plan.
Leading by Example
The TFI Smarter Travel for Workplaces programme continues to support Irish employers in promoting sustainable and active commuting. With growing participation across the country, smarter travel is helping to reduce transport costs, ease traffic congestion, enhance employee wellbeing and better manage parking demand.
A Climate-Positive Path Forward
These initiatives go beyond mere transportation solutions—they represent a broader commitment to creating a liveable, low-carbon Wicklow. By investing in clean, accessible mobility options, Wicklow County Council is empowering individuals to make everyday travel choices that support climate action, reduce emissions and build a more resilient, connected community.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Cllr. Paul O’Brien, welcomed MOBY, stating: “We are delighted to introduce the MOBY e-bike scheme to Wicklow Town and Rathnew. This is a smart, climate-focused initiative that will make a real difference to how people move around our towns. By offering a clean and convenient alternative to the private car, we’re reducing congestion, cutting emissions, and improving the quality of life for our residents and visitors. This is a practical step toward a more sustainable future for County Wicklow.”
Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, added: “The launch of the MOBY e-bike scheme in Wicklow Town and Rathnew highlights our commitment to delivering climate action on the ground. This initiative supports our goals for active and low-carbon transport, and it’s part of a broader effort across the county to reduce emissions and promote healthier, more sustainable communities. Through collaboration between our Municipal Districts, the Active Travel Team and the Climate Action Team, we are creating smarter travel options that benefit everyone.”
Brian Gleeson, Director of Service for Wicklow Municipal District, commented: “Bringing shared e-bikes to Wicklow Town and Rathnew is a great example of how local government can lead by doing. By investing in sustainable transport and giving people real alternatives to private car use, we’re not only reducing our operational impact—we’re also empowering communities to take part in climate action. These kinds of initiatives are key to delivering on our Climate Action Plan and making low-carbon lifestyles easier and more accessible.”
Thomas O’Connell, CEO and Founder of MOBY, expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re excited to launch our e-bike sharing scheme in Wicklow Town and Rathnew. Our goal is to support Wicklow County Council in making sustainable travel an easy and appealing choice. Whether commuting, connecting to public transport, or exploring the area, our e-bikes offer a reliable and zero-emission alternative to driving.
