Wicklow Artists Salon #11: Soundbites

18th February 2025, Mermaid Art Centre

Guest Artists:

  • Jennie Moran
  • Anthony Kelly

For our first salon of 2025 we are delighted to be joined by two exciting, innovative Irish artists who will be immersing us in a unique communal creative experience. Anthony Kelly takes both a sonic and visual approach to his art. Jennie Moran’s art centres around hospitality and food. For this salon they will collaborate in creating a one-time only sound-and-food experience. Against Anthony’s atmospheric pre-recorded and live soundscapes, Jennie will offer us a series of specially prepared small edibles and drinks. A chance for Wicklow artists to enjoy the warmth of a hospitable gathering with fellow creatives!

The Wicklow Artists Salon is curated by visual artist Joanna Kidney and writer Philip St John. It is funded by Wicklow Arts Office and The Arts Council of Ireland, and supported by Mermaid Arts Centre, The Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely, Kilruddery House and Russborough House.

BIOS:

Jennie Moran uses the philosophy of hospitality to create opportunities for shared connection. She started an art/food/hospitality project called Luncheonette in 2013 which operated as the canteen in NCAD in Dublin. She has written a book entitled 'How to Soften Corners' about hospitality. Her creative research is supported with an Arts Council bursary. She provides mentorship in holistic hospitality to creative organisations, lectures in universities and curates discursive events. She is a chair of the Oxford Food Symposium and Dublin Gastronomy Symposium. She won Best Emerging Voice at the Irish Food Writing Awards and is featured in the Irish Independent's Ones to Watch for 2025. https://luncheonettedublin.com/

Anthony Kelly is an artist based in Dún Laoghaire whose practice involves sonic and visual approaches to making his work. This includes painting, drawing, sound recording, sculpture, sound installation, film & video, and improvised sound performance. Although diverse in construction, his work chiefly concentrates on the shifting and fragmentary nature of sensory experience. To explore this he uses the discarded or overlooked aspects of the world around us which he enlarges and amplifies to create his work. His creative process frequently involves collaboration. Anthony has received funding from the Arts Council of Ireland, Culture Ireland, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and other funding bodies. His work has been exhibited widely in Ireland and abroad. He is a director of the Farpoint Recordings sound art & new music label based in Dún Laoghaire, and maintains an ongoing collaboration with fellow artist David Stalling. www.anthonykelly.net         www.dunlaoghairesoundmap.com
