National policy set out in 2007 requires that all public authorities must reduce energy use by 33% by the year 2020.

In signing the Climate Charter in December 2019, Wicklow County Council committed to 'deliver a 50% improvement in energy efficiency by 2030 (on the 2009 baseline)'.

National policy also requires that we should move towards renewable energy sources so as to have security of energy supply and reduced carbon emissions.  Wicklow County Council, as a public authority, is statutorily required to report annually to SEAI on energy management and performance data.

Wicklow County Council has identified energy efficiency as a key goal in meeting the national targets and in reducing long term costs.  There is committment at management level to achieving these targets, and Wicklow County Council is signed up to the SEAI Partnership Programme for Public Bodies.  An Energy Team, led by the Energy Performance Officer, is in place for the Council.  Wicklow County Council continues with a programme of upgrading social housing with energy efficiency measures.

Wicklow County Council provides services out of over 35 buildings. These buildings include the main County Buildings in Wicklow Town, Area Offices, Town Halls, Libraries, Heritage Centres, Swimming Pool / Leisure Centres, Fire Stations, Community Centres and Waste Management Sites.

The annual estimated energy consumption for Wicklow is 22 million kWh per annum of which approximately 10 million kWh's is electricity and 8 million kWh's per annum is gas.  Four million kWh's is consumed by LPG, oil and transport fuel.
