National Heritage Week 2022 which runs from Saturday, 13th August, until Sunday, 21st August, will be celebrated across County Wicklow.

In-person event and digital project organisers have responded with enthusiasm to this year's theme of sustainability and biodiversity, creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about our built, cultural, and natural heritage, helping to ensure its preservation and protection in the future. There are over 50 individual events taking place in County Wicklow, the majority free-of-charge and family friendly.
Examples of events include:
- Dragon Fly Walk at East Coast Nature Reserve
- Medieval History Walks and Pottery workshops in Arklow
- A ‘Big Dig for Kids’ in Glendalough as well as archaeological, folklore and graveyard tours
- A 12 Graves historical walk in Glenmalure
- 'Hauntological’ sound tour at Killruddery Estate,
- Basket making demonstrations
- A Battle of Delgany re-enactment
- Gardening for biodiversity talk at Glendalough
There will also be woodland talks at Wicklow Mountains National Park, guided native woodland walks at Altidore Castle and at Humphrystown, invasive species walk at Tinahely, a talk on swifts in Rathdrum, historical tours in Bray, a talk on the Kennedy’s of Newtownmountkennedy, whale watching from Bray Head, visits to Ballymurrin Quaker Farmhouse, Nuns Cross Church, and Old Connaught Graveyard.
Wicklow County Council’s library service is hosting a series of events including backyard seed saving workshops in Bray, a Lego Glendalough play+learn event in Blessington, poetry evening in Greystones, guided online tour of Wicklow’s heritage at Arklow and an Open Day at Wicklow Town local studies library.

This year, in the interests of sustainability, audiences are directed to visit the www.heritageweek.ie website rather than printed material. On the website visitors can use the filter arrow to search for events happening in county Wicklow, or on specific dates and selected themes. Another new feature to the website is that visitors can click on the ‘heart’ symbol at events and to create their own bespoke Heritage Events trail for the events they wish to attend.
