Wicklow County Council is delighted to receive €7 million in funding for Active Travel projects in County Wicklow, as announced yesterday by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, along with Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Seán Canney and Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer. Aside from this figure, an extra €500,000 has been allocated for the Bus Enhancement Programme and €115,974 for Transport Studies in both Arklow and Bray.
This investment will help Wicklow County Council to deliver necessary infrastructure to provide sustainable transport options to all residents of the County. The funding we have received will see the progression of over 30 projects, details of which will be available on our website in the coming days.
Commenting on the funding, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan, said, “I’m delighted to see the progress the Active Travel team have made through the implementation of increased walking and cycling infrastructure across the county. The continued support and funding from the National Transport Authority is vital to continue this good work. The residents of County Wicklow have embraced these changes and it is great to see so many people using the infrastructure put in place.”
Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, Emer O’Gorman, said the support to further Active Travel infrastructure across the county is crucial, adding, “I welcome the announcement of this vital funding from the NTA. It will allow our Active Travel team to further progress the delivery of invaluable schemes across the county. Our completed schemes, like the Bray Transport Interchange - which has delivered a high-quality public realm interchange between the key transport modes of walking, cycling, taxi, bus and railway at Bray Train Station - is an example of the works we can carry out with the continued support and funding received from the NTA.”
Joe Lane, Director of Services for Transport and Infrastructure Delivery said, “We are delighted with the investment from the NTA. Their continued support is paramount and allows us to progress our schemes across the Municipal Districts of Bray, Arklow, Wicklow, Baltinglass and Greystones. It will enable us to continue with our goal of every resident using active travel options in their daily lives, as we have provided them with a practical and safe choice to do so.”
Commenting at the funding announcement, Minister Darragh O’Brien stated, “The allocation of €360 million in 2026 for active travel and greenway projects demonstrates the Government’s commitment to expanding sustainable transport options and delivering on the provision of safe and accessible walking and cycling infrastructure in both urban and rural areas.”
