The Collection

The main Local Study collection includes books, photographs, postcards, maps, microfilm collections which together document the past activities of individuals, organizations and businesses in County Wicklow, as well as, material relating to the topography, geography, local flora and fauna of the county.

Much of the collection is unique and irreplaceable and includes many rare, out of print and fragile items. A selection of our holdings can be viewed here (to search the site, press Ctrl + F and enter your term).

Our local studies library holds a number of local historical society journals as well as more general publications such as Irish Roots, Archaeology Ireland, History Ireland and The Irish Sword.

Our newspaper collection dates back to 1858, starting with the Wicklow Newsletter and continuing to the present with the Wicklow Standard, Wicklow Star and The Bray & Wicklow People newspapers.

Other resources include a postcard and print collection and reference works such as Cantwell’s Memorials of the Dead, Price’s Place-names of County Wicklow and Griffith’s Valuation.

The Local Studies collection can be searched on the Wicklow County Council Library catalogue here.
