Black Castle Conservation & Stabilisation Project.
Wicklow County Council wishes to inform that conservation works are scheduled at the Black Castle Monument from 13th October 2026 – duration 2-3 weeks
Description of works:
This project will include stabilisation and soft capping of three low masonry walls of the Black Castle monument. Works will entail lime-based repairs, wall-head protection, soft capping trials, archaeological monitoring, ecological oversight and digital survey. These phase 1 works will enhance the resilience of the monument, addressing deterioration caused by coastal exposure and climate-related pressures.
It will be necessary to restrict public access to the monument for the duration of works (2-3 Weeks). We apologise for any inconvenience.

This essential conservation work is funded by National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage through the Community Monument Fund 2026. Works are carried out as per Section 14 Consent (C001527) issued by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage under of the National Monuments Act 1930 as amended.
The ‘Black Castle’ is a Recorded Monument of national archaeological and historical significance (WI025-013 ) and is included on the Wicklow Record of Protected Structures (W 22 & W23)
