Interment of Ashes St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Arklow

The members of Arklow Municipal District have requested that Wicklow County Council host a public consultation with the citizens of the Arklow Municipal District regarding their preferred option for the interment of ashes at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Arklow. The interment of ashes is the act of placing them in a final permanent location. There are a number of options available. A person’s ashes can be placed in a columbarium wall, buried in a family grave, placed in a garden of remembrance, or scattered. Completed surveys should be returned to Planning, Development & Environment, Wicklow County Council, County Buildings, Wicklow Town or Arklow Municipal District Office, Main Street, Arklow, Co. The interment of ashes is the act of placing them in a final permanent location.  There are a number of options available.  A person’s ashes can be placed in a columbarium wall, buried in a family grave, placed in a garden of remembrance, or scattered.

  • Option 1: Cremation & interment of ashes in a family plot

    Cremation and interment of ashes in an existing family plot.
  • The estimated cost of option 1 is approximately €175.00 (not including the cost of purchase of plot as it would be utilising an existing family plot). 


  • Option 2: Ash Plots / Garden of Remembrance

  • Ash plots / Garden of Remembrance are designed to reflect miniature burial grounds where cremated remains are interred in an urn placed in the ground.  A memorial stone above the ground is inscribed with the name and date of death.

    The estimated cost of option 2 is €300.00 to €400.00. 


  • Option 3: Cremation and interment of ashes in a columbarium wall

  • A columbarium wall allows the placing of cremated remains into niches, each with a front section incorporating a memorial plaque. The cremated remains are placed behind the plaque in urns which are specifically designed for this purpose. The memorial plaque is engraved with an inscription. Each niche accommodates one or two cremated remains.

    The estimated cost of a niche in a Columbarium Wall, which would hold two urns, is €1,200 to €1,400. 


  • Option 4: Cremation with inscription on a remembrance stone and no interment

  • Where families have either retained or scattered the ashes but wish to have the name and date of their loved one inscribed on a memorial stone. If families wish they can scatter cremated remains in the vicinity of the Remembrance Stone.

    The estimated cost of option 4 is €150.00 to €200.00.


  • Option 5: Cremation with no interment and no memorial / inscription

  • Where families opt for no interment, memorial or inscription the ashes of a loved one can either retained or scattered at a chosen location.

    There is no cost for this option.
